I Believe in God
Characteristics of God
Read Exodus 34:1–7
God demonstrated His mercy when He had Moses prepare a new set of tablets to replace the one Moses had broken in anger. As God passed by Moses, He dramatically revealed characteristics of himself that we also can experience.
• Compassionate and gracious: God bestows on us mercy and unmerited favor.
• Slow to anger: God is patient with us.
• Abounding in love and faithfulness: He showers us with a loyal love.
• Forgiving wickedness, rebellion, and sin: God consistently displays His mercy toward us by forgiving our sins.
Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation (Exodus 34:7).
A holy God cannot allow sin to go unpunished. His mercy allows us the opportunity to renew a right relationship with Him. To decline that opportunity is to risk the fallout of sin. God always prefers to show His mercy rather than His anger.
Prayer for Today: Lord, thank You for the mercy You so freely give us. May we never take that mercy for granted.
Devotional brought to you by God's Word For Today.

Jesus in America
After being asked to lead the opening prayer for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, Pastor Gerry Stoltzfoos was denied because of his refusal to omit Jesus' name from the prayer. Several recent polls express a majority of Christians in America do not consider belief in Jesus a requirement for eternal life. Zollie L. Smith Jr., national director of AG U.S. Missions, says these findings show a need for Christ-centered ministries in the United States.
